    From the Towns Around

Begin with the closest towns. Measured as a straight line, Walkerton lies 9.8 km west, Durham 17 km east and Chesley 17.8 km north. Any road route runs longer than that line, and the guide gives no estimate of driving times.

Weekend drives from farther start in Owen Sound, 47.3 km north, and Kincardine, 48.6 km west. Kitchener lies 88.4 km to the south; Toronto is 142.6 km to the east. The casino is reached by car: no bus route, shuttle, taxi stand or hotel on site is published. On race days fans park for free, while parking details for other days are not published.

    Getting the Whole Group In

Entry is for those aged 19 or more who show valid photo ID from a government. At 21 or younger, a guest also needs a second document bearing their name. In a group of friends, the youngest should remember that extra card. People trespassed or self-excluded, either at this casino or at any gaming property in Ontario, are barred from visiting.

The tag tool below checks a whole group at once. The ages typed into it are not sent anywhere or kept.

Also for the trip: an ATM inside the casino, U.S. dollars exchanged at the cashier's cage, and anyone self-excluded from an Ontario gaming property may not enter.

The Floor on a Friday Night

The gaming floor has 289 slot machines. All table games are electronic: Blackjack, Roulette, Baccarat and War run on 18 interconnected stations, some automatic and some dealer-assist. Nothing in the listings points to live tables or a poker room.

At the back sits the Hanover Raceway Simulcast Theatre. Horse races from other tracks are shown live there and can be bet on. On Friday and Saturday it opens from 12 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday run from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., and on Wednesday and Sunday the screens stay on with no staff. An ATM is inside the casino, and the cashier's cage exchanges U.S. currency.

      Eating Under One Roof

The Arcade Bar sits right on the casino floor. Its pre-made items and Arcade menu can be had every day between 9 a.m. and 1 a.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday add a plated breakfast, served from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m.

MATCH Eatery & Public House, a modern pub built around a sports and entertainment theme, is one of the two restaurants; the Buffet is the second. Each can be reached through the main entrance or a patio entrance. No regular hours are published for either, so phone 519-364-7606 before planning a meal around them.

      The grounds

Grounds Shared With a Harness Track

Hanover Raceway, a Standardbred harness-racing track at 265 5th Street, sits on the same grounds as Playtime Casino Hanover. It is operated by the Hanover, Bentinck & Brant Agricultural Society. Live racing takes place over a summer season, and the dates are posted on hanoverraceway.com.

The raceway first got slots on February 21, 2001. Gateway took them over in May 2017 within the Southwest Gaming Bundle, through a 20-year OLG agreement. Next, an $18 million expansion relocated the casino to the Carriage Hall of the agricultural society, behind the old building. The grand opening as Playtime Casino Hanover was in April 2019.

      Online in Ontario

      The Ontario Online Market

Ontario's regulated market for online gambling launched on April 4, 2022. iGaming Ontario handles its conduct and management, and the AGCO is the regulator. Only a private online casino registered with the AGCO, and holding an iGaming Ontario operating agreement, is legal in Ontario. Regulated sites appear in a list at igamingontario.ca. OLG, the provincial agency, runs its own online casino, OLG.ca.

People 19 and over may play online, but only while physically located in Ontario. Hanover lies in Ontario, yet the 5th Street casino and an online site are not the same thing. On betguard.ca, BetGuard lets someone keep themselves off each regulated online gambling site Ontario allows, OLG.ca as well. Lengths: 1 year, 6 months, 5 years or one of their own choice. Land-based casinos are not covered.
